Girl
A young girl poses in front of a water well at the Old Telegraph station in Alice Springs. Australia's first immigrants were convicts. Between 1788 and 1868 about 160,000 convicts arrived. About 25,000 were women and although the women population was significant it was outnumbered by men. Between 1850 and 1900 the colonial government endorsed the immigration of single women to ease the shortage of domestic servants. The women were paid for their passage and about 10,000 single women immigrated from Britain to the Australian colonies.
