1998 was a turbulent year in Indonesia's history. Soeharto, Indonesia's President for more than 30 years, stepped down amidst heavy protest. Embassies quickly issued stern warnings against travel to Indonesia after seeing dramatic television footage of protesting students and bloody riots. Tourists avoided Indonesia at all costs, it had long been a popular travel destination. Even in Bali, known for it's green rice terraces, blue oceans, famous surfspots, dances and gamelan music, it stayed quiet. |
