These puputans where hundreds of Balinese dressed in white clothes killed themselves meant for the Dutch deep international shame. No longer could they claim to bring civilization, progress and peace to the Balinese. Like other colonial rulers however they managed to wash the bloodstains from their hands. In this "colonial justification process" help came from Dutch scholars. They were sent to Bali and for them (from the Balinese side it remains to be seen) it was love at first sight. The Dutch scholars passionately studied the Balinese women (in those days known for their bare breasts) and the more culturally interested among them focused on the Balinese dances, gamelan music, and Hindu rituals.
