Fort Lauderdale. In the 1920s, developer Charlie Rhodes used a Venetian technique called 'finger-islanding' to carve a series of parallel canals out of a swamp in South Florida, and Fort Lauderdale was born. Its 300 miles of waterfront living are a paradise for sailors, boaters and water-skiers.
