Liberator
Field Hockey was one of the first few sports where women were allowed to compete in a team athletic situation. At the end of the nineteen century the sport liberated women from their domestic roles as caretakers of the family. Although friendly national and international field hockey games were held since early 1900 it took till 1974 before the first Women's World Cup was held. In 1980 women's field hockey became an olympic event. Photograph © 2002 Andrew Kaufman.
