| Enlightenment and ideology redefined women's place in society around the mid 18th century. Middle and upper class women in towns and cities had to stay at home and take care of their husbands and children. However women who worked on America's farms or were part of it's westward migration still enjoyed the freedoms of their equals in the 17th century. They participated in the traditional sports like fishing, hunting and horse racing. Photograph © 2002 Andrew Kaufman. |
