| Modern sports for women |
| In 1850 gender boundaries that confined women to the domestic sphere were challenged. Women reappeared in the public domain as teachers and nurses. Training institutions for women were founded. In these colleges women started to participate in new modern sports like tennis and hockey that had replaced the old traditional sports of fishing, hunting and horse racing.
