The Apple
Field Hockey was introduced to the USA by Constance Applebee in 1901. Applebee was born in 1873 in Britain and known as 'the apple.' She was a frail child and studied physical education to improve her health. In 1901 she attended a summer course at Harvard University and demonstrated the English women's game of field hockey. The next 25 years she taught field hockey at several women college's in the USA . She died in 1981. Photograph © 2002 Andrew Kaufman
